The Best Family Bike Shop in America

From the Trek Catalog story "The Best Dealers on Wheels":

You'd be hard-pressed to find a bicycle dealer who has seen more than Elmer Sorensen, founder of Penn Cycle in Minneapolis. The former airline mechanic and avid fisherman opened his first bike shop in 1957, operating out of the alley behind his house. "It was extra money for minnows", he reminisces, "and fishing trips with my boys." Elmer has been with Trek since the very beginning as well, signing on as its first dealer in 1976. "There was need for a light-weight, advanced bike and Trek came through with it," he says, "and at a great price."

Both companies have grown considerably over the years, as evidenced by the 1995 opening of Penn Cycle's fifth shop, a $1 million superstore in Eagan, Minn. The business is much larger now, and son Pat has become a partner and major contributor. Still, the Sorensen's remain steadfast proponents of the guiding principle that got them here. "The number-one thing our customers should expect is to enjoy their bikes," the elder Sorensen proclaims. "When we sell a bike, it's a long-term relationship." Many customers have purchased more than 20 bikes from Penn Cycle, a fact that Elmer is very proud of. "You've got to start with a high-quality product and back it up with service. Only a dedicated bike dealer can do that for you."

Note: Elmer Sorensen, founder of Penn Cycle passed away on July 8th, 2000. He will be missed by all of us at Penn Cycle. Elmer's son Pat, pictured above is the new president of Penn Cycle and will continue the legacy that his father started in 1957 in exactly the same award-winning style. Penn Cycle is the only bike dealer ever featured in Trek's national catalog.
